Acupuncture is used primarily when a patient falls ill, experiences pain, or feels out of balance. It can also be used as a preventative medicine because it strengthens the body's immune system. Over 4,000 years ago the ancient Chinese theorized that the body had an energy force running throughout it known as Qi (pronounced Chee). Qi travels throughout the body along "Meridians" or special pathways as an invisible current, energizing, nourishing and supporting every cell, tissue, muscle, organ and gland. The acupuncture points are specific locations where the Meridians come to the surface of the skin, and are easily accessible by "needling," Moxibustion, and Acupressure.
Inserted acupuncture needles stimulate the Qi flowing in the meridians and can either decrease or increase its strength. When stimulated, each acupuncture point can influence the Qi in the meridians in specific ways.
